The Dynamic Sternum-Rib Fracture- Chest Contusion Belt
The treatment of rib fracture, chest contusion, and post-sternotomy pain has hitherto been the use of static chest compression belts, corsets, or bandages. However the compression of the chest wall has the inherent danger of limiting base of lung ventilation with the danger of causing atelectasis and infection. Therefore these static compression devices can only be used with caution and their permitted tightness is limited indeed. Hence they are often ineffective.
Prof Daniel Reis has researched a dynamic belt. The principle behind this innovation is to allow the patient to temporarily tighten the belt whenever this is necessary for coughing up secretions and other physiotherapeutic exercises or when movement is required for a limited time. This belt allows constant application at a tightness determined by the surgeon and the patient compliance (affording some comfort) with the added advantage that the patient himself can when needed grasp and pull the tightening handle to increase chest wall pressure support temporarily Cardio-thoracic surgeons have reported patient and physiotherapist satisfaction after a limited preliminary trials after sternotomy for open cardiac surgery. Our emergency room surgeons have also expressed satisfaction. In summary, the first trials have shown that the dynamic belt is superior to the static ones in general use.
